Comprehensive Course in Treating Child Sexual Abuse This course was developed by Ann S. Botash, MD, to provide education to medical providers who will be involved in sexual abuse evaluations, thereby improving access to competent care for children who may have been sexually abused. Dr. Botash is the Medical Director of the CARE (Child Abuse Referral and Evaluation) Program in Syracuse, New York, and an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the State University of New York Upstate Medical University. The course consists of a pre-test, a self-study workbook and video, and a post-test. The workbook and its accompanying videotape offer a learning experience for medical professionals who are beginning to work in the area of child sexual abuse. It was designed as a self study training program as well as a continuing reference. Its case studies and integrated question and answer format facilitate self-paced learning. In addition, the professional is guided to relevant supplemental references. The workbook is divided into four sections: • Decision Points in the Evaluation of Child Sexual Abuse • The Medical History for Child Sexual Abuse • The Medical examination for Child Sexual Abuse • Medical-Legal Issues in Child Sexual Abuse The workbook can also be used as an entry into a mentorship program with an experienced provider. (See “Developing a Training Program”) “An excellent training program for medical examiners who are interested in performing evidentiary examinations on children and adolescents who are suspected of having been sexually abused.” - John McCann, MD, Director, Child Protection Center, University of California, Davis. |
